Formal Shoes
A durable covering for the human foot, made of patent leather or a faux patent material with a sole and heel, usually extending no higher than
the ankle. Modern interpretations of tuxedo shoes can extend higher than
the ankle but will almost always offer gloss or semi gloss finish. This finish is what makes a dress shoe formal.
Patent Leather & Faux Patent Coverings
The sheen of patent leather and faux patent shoe coverings are an important part to completing a tuxedo. This sheen allows tuxedo shoes to
compliment and continue the overall formal look of the vertical satin stripe found on the sides of tuxedo pants. Which this stripe continues
the satin lapels found on most tuxedos.
Shoe Eyelets
A shoes eyes (eyelet) exist for a place to insert shoe laces. For an even
flow of support the eyes of a shoe are usually found in uneven numbers. Meaning 3, 5 or 7 eyes per side. This is to allow the top of the foot a
maximum amount of support and flexibility.
Shoe Laces
A length of string or cord with an aglet on both ends. An aglet is a small plastic or fiber tube around the ends of the lace which allows for
the lace to be passed through a shoes eyelet or similar opening with ease. Generally the aglet of a lace stops
the fraying of lace ends which will undoubtedly occur without the aglets.
Shoe Heels (Raised)
A shoes heel is designed to support the foot heel. A raised heel which is
found on almost all formal shoes is designed with a few benefits in mind.
The first being an insulator for impact. Meaning it absorbs the impact of
the ground by way of absorbing the tiny shocks that originate from the foots heel contacting the ground.
Enhancing one's posture is another benefit of the raised heel. By elevating the rear of the foot or tuxedo shoe, a person's posture is
thought to be somewhat automatically straightened because of the slight forward lean of the body. The slight forward leaning is thus offset when
the body automatically resists the lean by straightening itself upward. This is hardly
noticeable to the raised heel wearer if the increase in height is under an inch or two.
Finally the theoretical benefit of a raised heel formal shoe is to
somewhat limit mobility. By having a raised heel, running becomes difficult. Thus mobility becomes restricted to a fashion that is
civilized and more formal.
Extreme Example: Every time a female character in a
motion picture needs to run, the character takes off the raised heel
shoes.
