Formal
accessories overview: (by www.TuxedoPro.com)
Formal accessories include, vests, cummberbunds or sashes,
bow ties, 4-in-Hand Ties, Windsor Ties, ascots, suspenders and formal
jewelry.
Vest options vary from manufacturer. The fullback vest with
waist adjustable straps, which is worn around the entire upper
body is a great choice for all formal attire except when wearing
tails. Fullback formal vests are not height adjustable and rest
low on the body which is about three to six inches longer than
etiquette allows. You can have a fullback vest height-altered
but this will effect the overall look of the vest on the upper
portion of the body, thus a backless vests should be worn with
tails.
Backless formal vests are waist and height adjustable. The
backless vest can be worn with all formal attire and usually
features a thinner top than a fullback vest.
Cummerbunds: Also known as a sash, the cummerbund can be worn
with any formal attire.
Formal Ties: The most popular formal tie is the bow tie followed
by the 4-in-Hand or Windsor Tie (looks like a neck tie). A bow
tie can be worn with either a vest or cummerbund. A 4-in-Hand or
Windsor tie must be worn with either a backless or fullback
vest. Other tie varieties include euro ties, button covers and
crossover ties. Euro Ties (half an ascot) require a vest while
the later can be worn with a vest or cummerbund. Finally ascots
must be worn with a vest.
Suspenders: Available in either clip-on or button holed are used
to hold up your trousers. Never use black suspenders on a white
shirt when using a cummerbund as your chest accessory. Use only
white in that instance. Otherwise suspenders are to be worn on
the inside of any and all vests. On backless vests be sure to
follow the cummerbund rule, white shirt = white suspender. This
is because the suspenders will show only partially and make one
look less formal.
